Routine Dental Cleanings

Preventive care is the cornerstone of good oral health, and that begins with routine dental cleanings. It is suggested that children should be seen for a dental cleaning and routine exam every 6 months or as recommended by our dentists. During the cleaning, plaque and calculus will be removed from the teeth, leaving behind a bright and polished smile.

We use routine dental cleanings as an opportunity to educate our young patients on proper hygiene techniques. We also give parents tips on helping their children build a lifetime of healthy oral habits.

Digital X-Rays

X-rays are one of the most valuable tools a dentist has for diagnosing problems in the teeth and jaws. Especially in children, X-rays are used to monitor tooth growth and development, as well as decay—helping us to keep their mouth and teeth healthy along the way.

Our office is proud to provide digital radiographs to our patients. Instead of using a traditional dark room, the images are sent electronically to a computer where they can then be easily viewed, stored, sent, or printed. This technology and software produces much higher quality images, uses 90% less radiation, and can be more comfortable for the patient than traditional films.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is an agent used to help prevent tooth decay. It is naturally present in different amounts in almost all foods and water supplies. Benefits of using fluoride have been well known for over 50 years and are supported by many health and professional organizations.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are an important preventive measure that help prevent decay on a child’s permanent molars. Our dentists recommend that sealants be placed to help preserve your child’s teeth and would be happy to discuss the benefits of sealants at your child’s next appointment.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

In the past few years, silver restorations have been replaced with tooth-colored fillings, resulting in a smile that looks completely natural. These restorations are a lot less noticeable than other types of fillings, allowing your child to smile with confidence.

Interceptive Orthodontics

Interceptive orthodontics provides children with early treatment for any minor orthodontic issues they may have. Whether your child has severe crowding, space loss, cross-bites, or similar conditions, we can help determine if interceptive orthodontics is the right solution.

Hospital Dentistry

We recommend hospital dentistry for children who are very apprehensive about dental visits, very young, or have special needs and require extensive dental treatment. Dental treatments will be completed in an operating room setting with the use of general anesthesia. Drs. Clarke, Wilgus, and Bennion all have staff privileges at St. Vincent Hospital and Northern Rockies Surgery Center.

Nerve Treatments & Therapeutic Pulpotomys

If decay or an infection reaches the pulp of a child’s tooth, a pulpotomy is performed to remove the infected nerve tissues and prevent the infection from spreading further. The dentist then applies sedative materials within the tooth to calm the remaining nerve tissue and prevent further bacterial growth.

Stainless Steel & Zirconium Crowns

The final step of the pulpotomy process is to restore your child’s tooth with a stainless steel or zirconium crown. Both of these are used to restore chewing function to the tooth and hold the space until the permanent teeth emerge. The entire procedure is done in one visit!

Nitrous Oxide in Billings, MT & Cody, WY

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is a safe, effective treatment offered to children who have a fear of the dentist. It is a blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide, and has a calming effect on the patient. The gas is absorbed by the body when inhaled, and at the end of the procedure, breathing 100% oxygen eliminates the nitrous oxide from the body within a matter of a few minutes.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is used to help our young patients who suffer from anxiety and dental fears relax during their appointment. It is also referred to as oral conscious sedation because the patient is conscious during the entire dental treatment. Oral sedation is administered in liquid form by mouth and takes 30 minutes for the patient to achieve a state of relaxation.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is another great way to help your anxious child relax during their dental visit. A certified anesthesiologist will carefully measure doses of sedation drugs to help your child feel at ease. The dosage amount is determined on a patient-by-patient basis, making general anesthesia a very safe option. General anesthesia is also beneficial because patients have no memory of the procedure.
